Zenith Temasek JC Orientation 2008
Tuesday, January 08, 2008 9:41 PM
Orientation at TJC was BAIK, HOT, SEXY & POWER!!! Baik means good in Malay, by the way. I think I was the only one who didn't know that. The first time I heard the Slithas House Cheer, I thought it was 'Partay, Partay, Partay, Partay'. And I was thinking, 'why are they telling us to party?' Tracy laughed at me when I told her that. Haha. Yalah Yalah, Malay language noob here.

Anyway, there were 4 Clans. The Slithas(snakes), Panthera(lions), Zephron(wolves) and Erypions(scorpions). The theme was Zenith, meaning the highest peak.

I was in Slithas House, OG 16!!! I was kinda shocked by how huge the OG was. 52 people? Because back at AHS, it was only like less than 10 per OG. Haha. Anyway, I actually estimated that it was 25 on the 1st day, but on the 2nd day, I found out that it was 52. Goes to prove how much my estimation sucks. No, that's not even an estimation la. That's inverting 52 to get an 'estimation' of 25.

Because the OG is so huge a group, I can't remember all the names, except a few. Haha.

Our OG had a bunch of TA1s and PRC scholars, and very few JC1s. There was pretty much a language barrier between the PRC scholars and us even though we are all chinese. Alright, maybe it's me only, because I could not quite understand what they were saying. Okay, that's an understatement because I could hardly catch what they were blabbering about. Hahaha.

But I did managed to learn how to communicate with them and tried my best to explain some of the games rules to them in my lousy incoherent chinese(and a little mixture of english), together with ALOT of gesturings, 'erms' and 'thens' at the start of every sentence because I couldn't find the correct chinese word to say. Hahaha. But that's only because I'm talking to China scholars. I was super nervous when talking to them because my Chinese sounds like anything but Chinese next to theirs. Haha. But I'm Chinese okay? I speak more Chinese than English. Chinese is like my 1st language when it comes to speaking and my 2nd language when it comes to writing. My family is like your typical Singaporean Chinese Hokkien family. At my house, we speak mostly chinese rojaked with some english(or singlish in this case) rojaked with some hokkien. There's no such thing as perfect English or perfect Chinese at my house, only perfect Hokkien. Hahaha.

I know some of my OGMs were surprised to hear me speaking in Chinese and even more so when they heard I took HCL. Quite a number of them were like, "Are you Eurasian? Because you look like one", "Are you Chinese? You look super white" or "Are you Singaporean?". My reply? I always laugh and then say 'I'm Singaporean Chinese. Yep, both my parents are Chinese." One girl even asked if my grandparents are Chinese. Haha.

I lost about 4kg during orientation. I'm getting closer to achieve New Year Resolution no. 2. Hahaha. It's probably due to the irregular meals and I only drank drinks for some meals. So yeah, a water diet does really help one to lose weight.

1st Day of Orientation
The whole morning was spent in the auditorium for all the talks on the curriculum by TJC personnel. My back hurt like hell after sitting for about 3 hours. This is especially so when your backbone is slanting alittle to the left. But I guess it's the same in all colleges. It's better to sit through all the talks and get to know the college's system than to get into trouble with it later.

Soon, it was lunch at the opposite hawker centre, we bought takeaways and then ate at the super uber huge stage beside it. Then it was OG games back at school. Or was it mass dance first? I can't really remember. Anyway, for the games, it was a few ice-breaking-and-bonding games. Mass dance was alright. S Club 7 dance. I was still dancing my pretty-messed-up-dance-steps and looking like a retarded robot dancing(scratch that, it's not dancing, I don't even know what's that). And I still don't know how to do the 'Running Man' steps. Never mind the fact that the SCs taught us the mass dance a month ago. -_-

Honestly, I was kinda disappointed with 1st day of orientation because it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Again, it's the same for all orientations where the first day is always about important talks and little games. But that's because I had no idea about what was about to come up during the next few days of orientation...^^

2nd Day of Orientation
TJC Choir is totally, WOW! Totally changed my mind about choir. They performed 珊瑚海 and Can't Take My Eyes Of You at the auditorium. 珊瑚海 was really superb, sorry Jay Chou fans but I've to admit that it's so much better than the original by Jay Chou. Haha. And there was even beatboxing in Can't Take My Eyes Of You! Super cool!

Amazing Race was alright. The whole OG was divided into Group A and Group B. It kinda boring(=X) at first because we were walking around Marine Parade area trying to find the correct block for the game stations. Plus a cough, a runny yet blocked nose and the continuous cold wind wasn't helping one bit. Felt like I was going to choke on the phlegm to death or freeze to death anytime. Didn't really feel like joining in the games at first. You know, when you get a blocked nose, you get blocked ears too. It's the kind of 'buy one get two free' which you won't like. So I was kinda deaf too. I hate being sick! And I had to get sick at about the time orientation started. It's just so great.

My feet hurt like hell because of the 天堂路 game at one of the ECP stations of the Amazing Race. Those who watch Taiwanese variety shows should know what 天堂路 is. For those who don't know, it's the many little(did I mention sharp too?) stones that sticks out from the ground and people are supposed to walk on it. They say it's supposedly good for health. Yeah, I say it's good if you're thinking of destroying your body's nervous system. I don't know why they call it 天堂路 instead of 地狱路. Maybe it's because when you step on it, you just feel like dying and going to heaven quickly. Haha.

So the game goes like this, our group have 6 min 15 secs to complete the game. Everyone have to 'walk', one at a time, one round on the 天堂路. Notice walk is in inverted commas because we didn't really have to walk. Our group has 25 people, so that's 15 secs for each person. In case you didn't know, the world's fastest man clocked 9.77secs for a 100m sprint. Although the 天堂路 distance is much shorter, but don't forget about the cute little innocent black stones sticking out of ground that may just kill you. Put the world's fastest man on it, and I bet he can't even last a second. So yeah, we didn't have to walk but we had to fly. I don't know how we did it but everyone ran on the 天堂路. Yes, ran, and screamed in pain. Even though we clocked 8 minutes in the end, it's still such an accomplishment. I mean, who else in the world, except us, runs on 天堂路?

Then...yes the torture isn't over yet, we wanted to earn bonus points. So, the whole group had to step on it again and, hand in hand, walk one more round. And we wanted even more bonus points, so Oliver and Amal had to walk on it once more, hand in hand, under the umbrella and singing Rihanna's Umbrella. I tell you, we TJCians have the craziest ideas and we do the craziest things.

The later parts of Amazing Race was fun! After Amazing Race, we were back at the college for Mass Dance!!! Forgot what's the dance called. It doesn't matter anyway since I can't remember dance steps, just tried my best to follow the SCs' and OGLs' dance steps. Haha.

Then it was OG performance brainstorming. We decided on a skit accompanied with a small STOMP performance.

3rd Day of Orientation
The third day started off with a talk on College Ethos(aka school rules). Then it was Mass Games!!! Another super fun part of orientation! Stretching to pick up styrofoam cups to fill up huge mineral water bottle. Playing 'dog-and-the-bone' with soap bars, soap water, tofu and sponges. Trying to find sweets in a tray full of flour with our mouth and ended up with flour all over our faces.

Then it was the skit and STOMP rehearsals. It was funny watching the OGMs act out the skit. The skit was just crazy and random. Haha.

Mass Dance in the afternoon. Danced couple dance, Dhoom, with Jiaxin. We purposely went all the way back of the line because we knew there were more girls than boys and in the end, we would just dance with each other. Haha. It was really fun dancing with her. Neither of us knew how to do running man. So we were basically making fools of ourselves.

Then audition for the OG performance. Although we didn't get selected in the end, at least we had fun preparing for the performance.

In the evening, we left the college to go to Suntec City's Fountain of Wealth for Mass Dance. We were running super late. Supposed to reach Suntec City at 6.30pm, but at 6.30pm, we were still at Bedok Interchange. Haha. The OGMs went Bedok KFC to buy takeaways for dinner. And then we ran all the way to MRT and then ran across Citylink to Suntec. Everyone was eating, running and trying to catch their breath. Haha. I didn't eat. Smart. Nah, I didn't want to risk myself getting indigestion or worse, appendicitis. Anyway, I can't multi-task, eat and run, at the same time. I'll probably be trailing far far far behind the OG if I were to eat.

Mass Dance at Fountain of Wealth was TOTAL HIGHNESS!!! It didn't matter if you knew how to dance or not. Just dance freestyle if you don't know. Nicole's pole-dancing was so hot!!! Some of the guys just grabbed hold of the lamp post and started dancing. Some others jumped onto the bench and started dancing freestyle. Was really really really HIGH(pardon me for my limited vocabulary) that night, with all the dancing and cheering!!!

After Mass Dance ended, I was feeling really thirsty and went with the girls to Macs. I didn't want queue so I spotted Wei Yang at the front of the queue and asked him to help me buy a SUPER LARGE coke. But he was already paying already so he asked this guy behind him to help me buy. And the guy was super nice to help me buy. I asked for his name. I think it's Wei Zheng or something. Can't remember.

While walking back to Citylink, I did my 'running man' for Shanmin to see, and obviously she was laughing at me. Yeah, I do think my dancing is quite funny too. Both of us are Slithas so we cheered the Fever Cheer for the 2 Pantheras, Kristy and Tracy, to hear. So yeah, we were dancing, cheering and doing the front ooh back ooh action right on the overhead bridge. People must have thought we just escaped from IMH. Embarrassing but that's what too much highness does to you. Haha.

4th Day of Orientation
We were only required to reach the college at 3pm. But we wanted an OG outing in the morning, so off we went to ECP!!!

We played the special version of Captain's Ball that has 'seamen' and 'landmen'. Guess you already know from the names that the players are divided into two categories, on land and in the water. Super fun game! We played Monkey too, and had this competition to see which team, 16A or 16B, could bury a person in sand first.

Time really flies when you're having fun. Soon, it was time for lunch at the East Coast Lagoon hawker centre and then back to the college to get prepared the Zenith Night.

Zenith Night(aka O' Night) was AWESOME!!! No, AWESOME is an understatement. But due to my limited vocabulary, I'll just stick to that first. The Clans Performances were great! Plus the Dare-dication!!! Erypion's House Captain & Zephron's House Captain was dared to kiss each other's lips on stage. Yeah, an ah beng and a muscleman kissing each other, totally classic! There many other funny dares too, like daring an OG to take off their socks and hanging them on their ears, doing their house cheers at the same time. Victor played wonderful piano! Nicole was so hot dancing, but then again, she is always hot. And she won the Beau-Talent Contest!!! She did OG 16 super duper proud!!! Screamed and cheered my voice hoarse together with the TA1 girls, Jiaxin, Jamie, Josephine(all the Js) and Kaiwen. Then we did the choo-choo train thing and ran around the hall screaming and shouting. We were running so fast that we had trouble catching up with one another.

Then OG 16 went onto the stage to dance Mass Dance. Didn't care if we didn't know how to dance or made fools of ourselves in front of the whole school. Just went up there to dance whatever we could and had lots of fun.

After Zenith Night ended at around 10.30pm, part of OG 16 went opposite for dinner/supper. I drank 2 teh-pengs and a chin-chow. 陈水桶. Haha.

I really had loads and loads and loads of fun at orientation! Thank you, OG16, OGLs, SCs, OGMs and House Captain!!! I love TJC!!!

OGLs, baik baik baik baik!!!
OG 16, baik baik baik baik!!!
Slithas, baik baik baik baik!!!
Everyone, baik baik baik baik!!!
